1915 Ford Old Number 4 Racer Roadster

  • Chassis Number: 3695820
Throughout history, the humble Ford Model T has been converted, changed, improved, and modified more than any other car. Fords compete in every venue known to racing. From County Fair dirt tracks to Regional Raceways, including the Indianapolis 500, (where a Ford-based racer finished fifth in 1923). Even Pikes Peak had Model T's racing to the top. A Ford won that championship in 1922.

Several companies sprang up offering high-performance parts for the venerable Ford. Racing heads for the engine, heavy-duty crankshafts, better pistons, stronger rear axles, and a myriad of other components were available.

This Car
This car was found in Long Beach, CA in the 1950's with the same race car body still on the car today. It is a faithful restoration of a 1915 racer, with only period speed parts.

Four-cylinder Ford Model 'T' engine with auxiliary Rajo overhead-valve cylinder head conversion. The engine produces approximately 50 horsepower. There are dual carburetors and pressure-fed fuel, operated by a hand air pump. The internal engine lubrication system is by 'Splash System' (no oil pump). Supplemented by the small tank on the right side under the chassis via hand pump and sight feed on the dash.

Cooling is done by Thermal Syphon assisted by an Auxiliary belt-driven water pump, Boyce Motormeter Temp Gauge is mounted on the radiator cap.

The ignition system is German Bosch Magneto, Geardriven Stewart. There is a 120 mph speedometer and 3000 RPM Tach which are linked chain driven.

The service brake is foot-operated and there is a single external drum. The emergency brake is hand-operated and works on the two rear-wheel drums. Wheels are Periman 23-inch artillery 'wooden spokes'. The top speed is over 100 mph.

Of the many great marques that race at the Historics in class 1-A, it was a real treat in the late 1980s to see one of the original Stutz racing cars from 1915 entered and race ready.

Since the current owner only races against himself at the Historics, he never thought of competing with the Stutz, it was just a pure pleasure to see it in action. Five or six laps into the race on the old 4-turn course, it all happened so fast I could not have planned it. The owner had passed a couple of cars and was steadily decreasing the gap on a few more when, as he exited turn 2, something broke his train of thought and he suddenly realized that the next car in front of me was the Big White Stutz.

Wow! Wouldn't it be great for a lowly Ford to pass an incredible Stutz! He really had no time to ponder it further, just follow the procedures. The timing turned out to be perfect. The long stretch between turns 2 and 4 allowed him to keep his foot in it, passing the Stutz at over 90mph. Definitely a life-long memorable highlight for old #4.
