Of the many great marques that race at the Historics in class 1-A, it was a real treat in the late 1980s to see one of the original Stutz racing cars from 1915 entered and race ready.
Since the current owner only race against himslef at the Historics, he never thought of competing with the Stutz, it was just pure pleasure to see it in action. Five or six laps into the race on the old 4-turn course, it all happened so fast I could not have planned it. The owner had passed a couple of cars and was steadily decreasing the gap on a few more when, as he exited turn 2, some-thing broke his train of thought and he suddenly realized that the next car in front of me was the Big White Stutz.
Wow! Wouldn't it be great for a lowly Ford to pass an incredible Stutz! He really had no time to ponder it further, just follow the procedures. The timing turned out to be perfect. The long stretch between turns 2 and 4 allowed him to keep his foot in it, passing the Stutz at over 90mph. Definitely a life-long memorable highlight for old #4.
