1965 Merlyn MK6A Sports Racer

  • Chassis Number: 89RS
This Merlyn MK 6A, SN89RS, is the second to last MK 6A manufactured by Colchester Racing Developments, 90RS being the last. There were only 12 MK 6A produced, although there were approximately 20-25 MK4 and MK6 combined. The car was purchased from a storage bend located in Laguna Nigel, California, as a total basket case. '89RS' has been stored for over 25 years, and was received by the current owner in pieces with no transmission, rear deck, wheels, engine parts, plumbing, etc. The front fenders were in shreds. Thank heavens this MK6A had its chassis plate, 89RS.

The restoration took over three years to finish, but since Flanery Racing Enterprises, Inc. was the very first importer of Merlyn cars in the US, and this cars owner had raced at Snetterton in 1963, he was very familiar with the Merly car's structure and manufacturing techniques. After research, the original owner of 89RS was found, a Edward Hamburger of California. Edward came to visit during the restoration, which was done in Connecticut. Edward related all the good times he had with the car and brought all the racing history details and, as the history shows, the car raced through the US at all the old Historic Circuits.

The vehicle's current owner, Paul Flanery, has a brother named Col. H.J. Simon, USAF, who was stationed at Bentwaters AFB, England. A social was held at the Officer's club for the local businesses, and there Col. Simon met John Barrington Lewis and Selwyn Hayward. John was a farmer and had previously raced sports cars. Information was relayed that Paul Flanery was racing his MGA and that's what sparked the interest in starting the Merlyn factory on John B. Lewis' farm in Little Bentley. Col. Simon handled the export and made Paul the US distributor. Several cars were sold in the US, including the MK III Formula Jr, MK 6, and the MK 6A. In fact, in 1963, Flanery Racing sold Charlie Barns the Merlyn MK 6 in which he won the G-Mod SCCA Championship in 1964.
