Electric cars were developed in the mid-1800s, along with streetcars, small delivery trucks, locomotives, and cabs. By the turn of the century, they were extremely popular and they competed successfully with the crude automobiles of the early 1900s. They had advantages over gasoline-powered cars in that they were quiet, smooth, and did not require cranking to get them running, and they were considerably more reliable.
The disadvantages were the low top speed and limited range before requiring charging, and many homes were not yet equipped with electricity to charge them. Batteries had a short life and required extensive replacement. As gasoline cars steadily improved, the prices went down, and the popularity of electric cars declined. A big nail in the coffin was the invention of the electric self-starter, although a few electrics continued to be made. Most were out of business by the early 1920s, but the Detroit Electric was an exception, producing cars until 1939 with a total production run exceeding 13,000 units from its start in 1907.
This 1918 Detroit Electric is unrestored with original paint and upholstery. It has been well cared for by antique car collectors since new, and it is well known among collectors, including avid electric car collector/owner William Ruger. In 2012, Mr. Ruger sold 15 cars from his collection, including this car, at the RM Auction at St. John's, where it was acquired by its present owner Keith Crain.
