Ferrari has a long history of racing and most of their early work was meant for the track. By the mid-1960s, half of all the vehicle's they built were meant for the road and had seating for four. The cars followed on the success of the 250 GTE of 1960. In January of 1964, Ferrari introduced the 330 GT 2+2 with its steel tube chassis which was 50mm longer than that of its predecessor. It had an independent front suspension and a live rear axle. Under the Pininfarina coachwork was a 330 horsepower, 4-liter V12 coupled to a four-speed overdrive gearbox. Its replacement, the 365 GT 2+2, was introduced at the Paris Auto Show in October of 1967 and it was the most refined Ferrari to date.

The 365 GT 2+2 was based on the 330GTC and given the familiar Ferrari combination of oval an round steel tubing chassis, an all-independent suspension and Koni's hydro-pneumatic self-leveling setup in the rear. Other refinements included mounting the engine and drive-train in rubber bushes to insulate the car's occupants from noise and vibration. Air conditioning and ZF power-assisted steering were offered as standard equipment. Power was from a 4.4-liter V12 offering 320 horsepower and coupled to a five-speed gearbox. Top speed was in the neighborhood of 150 mph and zero-to-sixty took just 7 seconds. At all four corners wer4e Girling ventilated disc brakes.

In total, 800 cars were produced during its lifespan, ending in 1971.

This early example is believed to have been the Paris Auto Show car for 1967 and also the prototype US version. It was delivered new to the Pinkerton family in New York through US importer Luigi Chinetti. The car was built pre-emissions that became mandatory in 1968. It has a number of European model features, including the electric quarter windows.

The car is finished in Navy Blue paint and rides on Borrani wire wheels fitted with Michelin XWX tires. The interior has been reupholstered in new ivory leather along with new carpet, headliner, door panels and rear parcel shelf. There is a Blaupunkt radio and correct wood-rim steering wheel with engraved spokes. It has been a US based car all its life and has been given recent cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment.

In 2012, this vehicle was offered for sale at the Quail Lodge presented by Bonhams Auction. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for the sum of $157,900 including buyer's premium.

The 1967 365 GT 2+2 became 'Ferrari's biggest and 'poshest' model yet.' This car was a prototype that was shown at the Paris Salon in October 1967. Its wheelbase was a long 104.2-inches, its steel tube frame suspended independently front and rear, the rear being self-leveling, and its body was designed in the style of the Superfast by Pininfarina, but with a Kamm tail. With a curb weight of close to two tons it needed all of its 320 horsepower from the Colombo-derived 4390cc V12 to thrust it from zero-to-60 mph in seven seconds and glide it to its top speed quoted at 140 mph plus. Power steering and brakes, air conditioning and power windows helped to make this model such a successful luxury car, with four seats.
