The Type 901 was introduced in 1964 and it was a winner from day one, with a privately-owned car winning its class at Daytona. The early Porsche 911s were also winners at the Monte Carlo Rally, Marathon de la Route, and many other venues, including at GT races around the world.
Porsche's 911 had an air-cooled overhead-cam, dry-sump lubricated flat-six engine with a 2-liter displacement size and 130 horsepower. Over the years it was steadily upgraded with power and displacement both rising significantly.
This Porsche 911S is a 'B'-series example and a proven class winner. It was built up from a nice street car in the early 1990s for ICSCC CP1 and SCCA Vintage competition. The current engine is a non-original but period-correct motor to SOVREN vintage racing specifications. It displaces 1991cc plus a legal .040 overbore on J&E pistons. It has an 11.5:1 compression ratio and factory Bosch mechanical fuel injection system and offers an estimated 225 horsepower. The original 901 gearbox has been replaced with a Type 915 with a close-ratio gear set and steel synchronizer rings. The differential is a ZF-limited slip. Brakes are from a 930 Turbo, and rides on Fuchs alloy wheels. The suspension and many other mechanical components have also been suitably upgraded.
Inside is a full roll cage, a high-backed racing seat from Joe's Racing Products, and racing seatbelts. There is a 10,000 RPM tachometer, 911's standard oil temperature, level and pressure gauges, as well as two additional gauges added beneath the dashboard. The interior has been gutted and plastic quarter windows installed.
In 2012 the car was offered for sale at the Quail Lodge presented by Bonhams Auction. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for $74,750 including buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2012
