1967 Citroen DS21 Convertible

  • Chassis Number: 4473044
In 1955, Citroen introduced the aerodynamically efficient, low-drag model DS. It had an all-independent, self-leveling, hydro-pneumatic suspension plus power-operated brakes, clutch and steering. It was introduced with a 1911cc, overhead-valve, long-stroke engine which was later replaced in 1966 by a short-stroke, 1985cc unit, also available in 2175cc and 2347cc versions. Other DS developments included swiveling headlights, fuel injection and a five-speed gearbox.

Other models offered alongside the original DS were the ID (a simplified, cheaper version), the cavernous Safari estate and the two-door Décapotable (convertible), the latter boasting coachwork by Henri Chapron. The convertibles produced by Charpon were originally done independent of Citroen. Later, the factory gave the project its blessing.

The Décapotables models were built on the longer and stronger chassis of the ID Break (Estate). In total, just 1,365 examples were (factory) convertibles made with the DS19/DS21 engine between 960 and 1971 while Chapron built a further 389 of his own, the last in 1973.

This example, chassis number 4473044, is one of 42 built with the superior 'green' hydraulic system and manual transmission. Notable features include a Jaeger dashboard and original FM Continental-Edison radio.

The car was purchased in 2001 in Eze on the Côte d'Azure. At the time, the car was in totally originally condition. During 2001 and 2002, it underwent a complete bodywork restoration and full mechanical overhaul. Since completion it has only been used three weeks annual for summer trips to Italy, being kept in storage the rest of the time.

The car is finished in Royal Blue with tan leather upholstery.

In 2012, the car was offered for sale at Bonhams Auction in Monaco. It had an estimated value of $180,000 - $250,000. Bidding failed to satisfy the vehicle's reserve and it would leave the auction unsold.
