The Pininfarina-styled Sport Spider was introduced in 1966 at the Turin Show and was based on a shortened 124 saloon floor plan and running gear. The Sport Spider and its derivatives would rack-up impressive successes for Fiat, with over 200,000 being sold before production ended in 1982.

In November of 1972, the Abarth Rallye version was introduced in prototype form at the Geneva Salon. It was a high-performance 'homologation special' based on the 124 Sport Spider. The Abarth Rallye versions were extensively revised with the intent on competing in rally competition. They featured an independent rear suspension by McPherson struts, wider light-alloy wheels, flared wheel arches, glass-fiber panels, a five-speed gearbox, limited-slip differential, an internal roll-over bar, rigid hardtop, competition seats, and a revised dashboard.

The power was a 1736cc twin-cam unit offering 128 bhp (DIN) in standard guise with 170 horsepower available in full rallying tune. The Abarth-modified 124 Spider was homologated for Group 2 competition and served as Fiat's frontline rally car throughout 1973, achieving one World Championship victory.

For 1973, it was re-homologated for Group 3 competition, picking up another World Championship win and several top-three finishes. In 1975 - in Group 4 competition - Maurizio Verini won the European Rally Championship at the wheel of the final 16-valve version.

This Abarth Rallye 124 has been ASI homologated and Group 3 prepared. It has been restored and participated in many historical rallies.

In 2012, the car was offered for sale at Bonhams Auction in Monaco. It had an estimated value of $55,000 - $74,000. Bidding failed to satisfy the vehicle's reserve and it would leave the auction unsold.
