1985 March 85G Navigation
Brooklyn-California transplant Phil Conte entered the IMSA GTP racing series in 1983 after years of building a successful electrical manufacturing business. Competition, as expected, was fierce, and results for Conte were rather lackluster. That changed when Conte was approached by Buick Division, who offered to supply its turbocharged V-6 engines through McLaren. With sponsorship from RC Cola, Conte Racing was officially crowned Buick's factory racing team.
John Paul Jr. and Bill Adam were given driving duties of the Buick-powered March 85G-1. It was on the pole for the 1985 season-opening Daytona 24 Hours race. Its best finish would be a fifth during the 1985 season, though it repeatedly performed well during qualifying. Subsequent type 85G March chassis went on to additional accomplishments into the 1987 season when the GTP series, like the Can-Am before it, fell to Porsche domination.
This car, chassis number 85G-1, was given a restoration to full racing preparation by Ray Langstrom of Miami, Florida, who also upgraded the instrumentation and fire protection systems to meet present standards. The V-6 Buick engine was completely overhauled, with only break-in time and running in the 2012 Monterey Motorsports Reunion, after which the car received a comprehensive inspection and service by Robin Automotive of the body, suspension, cockpit, engine, 5-speed gearbox, brakes and wheels.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2013
