The new Mercedes-Benz 230SL two-seater was introduced in 1963 and was a large improvement over the previous 190SL. The 190's four-cylinder engine was replaced by a six-cylinder powerplant rated at 150 horsepower. It was gradually increased in size to the most desirable 180 horsepower, 2.8-liter engine, as found in 1968's Mercedes-Benz 280SL. The 190 bodywork was replaced by Paul Bracque's crisp, angular design, and its detachable, concave hardtop roof earned it the nickname 'Pagoda Top.'
During the eight years of production, Mercedes-Benz built 49,812 230/250/280SL examples. The 280SL was the most popular model, with 23,885 examples produced.
This example has been given a frame-up restoration totaling nearly $55,000. It is finished in white with a matching hardtop and dark blue soft-top and interior. It has its original California black plates, and includes the books, tools, and jack. It has its original Becker radio, along with its original seatbelts, though upgraded belts have been fitted. Since the restoration was completed, the car has traveled about 2,000 miles.
In 2013, the car was offered for sale at RM Auction's sale in Scottsdale, Arizona. The lot was sold for $93,500, including the buyer's commission.By Daniel Vaughan | Feb 2013
