1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Navigation
With the presentation of the 230 SL at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963, Daimler-Benz launched a new sports car to replace two outgoing roadsters: the legendary 300 SL and the popular 190 SL. While stylistically similar, their respective design concepts were vastly different, so it proved to be quite a challenge to create a new common denominator. The new SL was a synthesis of the two previous models which set new standards in driving dynamics and safety. The new SL, known internally as series W113, was the first sports car ever with a rigid passenger safety cell along with front and rear crumple zones. The body design was characterized by its removable, concave shaped hardtop, which also gave it its nickname, the 'Pagoda.'
This car has recently been comprehensively restored at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center. Refurbishment of this matching numbers car included removal, rebuilding and reinstallation of all mechanical systems with special emphasis on correct functionality and appearance to factory new standards.
