1913 Peugeot Type 150 Labourdette Skiff

This 1913 Peugeot Type 150 Boat-tailed 'skiff' is an example of the coachbuilder's art at its finest and was designed by Carosserie Henri Labourdett. Its beautifully sculptured 'skiff' design is crafted in layers of mahogany.

Manufactured by SA des Automobiles Et Cycles Peugeot, Lille, France, the car boasts a 40 horsepower, 4-cylinder, 7478cc engine, with a single camshaft married to a four-speed gearbox.

Jean-Henri Labourdette created an exciting new automobile body style in 1912, known as a Skiff-Torpedo and built atop the Panhard & Levassor chassis. It was made for Rene de Knyff, a Frenchman who was part of the noble class known as the Chevalier.

When Jean-Henri Labourdette was first commissioned by the Chevalier Rene de Knyff to build a skiff body, he pointed out that a boat did not have doors, making the hull rigid. 'The doesn't matter,' the Chevalier responded, 'make me a torpedo without doors.' 'But how will you get in?' Jean-Henr objected. 'One will step over,' replied the Chevalier. 'And the ladies?' demanded Jean-Henri. 'Well, they will also step over. We will finally see their legs.'

By the fall of 1913, in time for the fourteenth annual Paris Salon, the new 'skiff' body style had become one of the most popular on exhibit. Labourdette had half a dozen on display, built on Panhard, Peugeot, and Abadal chassis.

Jean-Henry took such pride in his company's work that he signed his masterpieces. His signature is engraved on a brass plate above the rear passenger door.

Richard C. Paine Jr., the Seal Cove Auto Museum's founder, acquired the 1913 Peugeot 'skiff' in 1964 from the Dr. Samuel L. Scher collection. Dr. Scher had acquired the Peugeot from his friend James Melton after the closing of Melton's Autorama Museum in Hypoluxo, Florida.
