1939 Rolls-Royce Wraith Navigation
The Rolls-Royce Wraith running chassis was built by Rolls-Royce at its Derby factory from 1938 to 1939 and supplied to independent coachbuilders, mostly in England for fitment of a body.
Many enthusiasts are unaware that in the pre-war era, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Ltd. did not make complete cars. In that era, when a wealthy buyer decided to own a Rolls-Royce, he or she selected the coachbuilder of their choice and then chose the car's body styling from a wide variety of offerings from that coachbuilder's catalogue.
The Wraith features a four-wheel hydraulic jacking system, which means that changing a flat is easy. Simply press a button and the jack powers down to the ground and lifts the car. It also has centralized chassis lubrication, and servo assisted power brakes. It was also the first Rolls-Royce to feature an independent front suspension, giving it a ride that today still feels very modern. It has many convenience features and its silent 4.3 liter inline six is capable of cruising nicely at 65/70 miles per hour.
This car was the Show Car for Rolls-Royce Motors at its stand in the 1939 Earl's Court Motor Show, just before the outbreak of World War II. It was a departure from past Rolls-Royce design. It came equipped with independent front suspension (by license from General Motors' Cadillac division). It has centralized lubrication, Servo power brakes and 4 built-in hydraulic jacks operated from the passenger compartment. It can cruise along effortlessly at 65/70 MPH.
Freestone & Webb coachbuilders were pioneers in the new 'Knife Edge' body designs.
The Rolls-Royce was originally delivered to a Baronet in the Spring of 1940. The car has participated and driven on several Classic Car Club 'CARavans.'
This Rolls-Royce was stateside by 1969 , residing in the care of Raymond Gentile; in 1975, it was acquired by Scott Isquick. A restoration was performed from 1977 to 1983, earning it a First Place class award at the 1985 RROC annual meeting, and scored 99 points at a 1987 CCCA Grand Classic. It was driven on numerous RROC tours from the late 1980s until 2008. In 2013, it was shown at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance.
This Rolls-Royce Wraith has a Perspex sunroof over the rear seat, rear-hinged doors, and a distinctive chrome beltline molding separating the black and Primrose Yellow paintwork. The interior is done in light tan leather with woodwork on the dashboard, doors, and chauffeur's division, which features an electric window lift.
