1926 Miller Model 91 Navigation
This is one of two Miller Locomobiles built for Cliff Durant, son of General Motors founder William Durant, who had recently purchased Locomobile. The 16-valve, 91-cubic-inch, inline 8-cylinder engine is fitted with a supercharger that pushes engine output to 250 horsepower. The car started at the Indianapolis 500 in 1926, 1927, and 1928 with the best result, a seventh overall in its final year. The car continued to race under various owners and names, including the Boyle Valve Special, Kinglsey Special, and Orange Blossom Special. The car was driven by a series of great drivers, including Eddie Hearne, Fred Comer, Ralph Hepburn, Chet Gardner, and Billy Arnold. In the 1930s, it was modified into a sprint car and raced as the Roberts Special by Floyd Roberts. The car's final track performance was in 1955 in Los Angeles, ending a nearly 30-year racing career. A restoration to return the car to its original 1926 Indianapolis specification began in 2008 when it was then owned by collector Sam Mann. Once that was completed in 2013, the car won many awards. Its current owner took over the car in 2016.
The 1926 racing season put a cap on engine displacement size, allowing a maximum size of 91 CID. The legendary engineer, Harry Miller, could have shortened the stroke on his 122 cubic-inch engines which had been introduced in 1923, but instead, he decided to go another route. He and his staff began work on creating an entirely new car. The result was a vehicle that had a similar appearance to its predecessor, the 122, except for the new three-piece radiator and grille assembly. Beneath the carefully crafted body was an entirely new assembly. Called the 91, it featured a supercharged engine that initially developed 155 horsepower. Further refinement and tuning later pushed that figure well above the 250 HP mark.

The Miller 91 proved to be a dominant force in the world of speedway racing, and in 1930, the AACA changed to the 'Junk Formula,' increasing the displacement of engines to 366 cubic inches and no longer allowing superchargers.

In total, there were eight examples of the rear-wheel drive Miller 91 models produced.

A pair of Miller 91s were built in 1926 for Cliff Durant, a recent acquirer of the Locomobile Company of America. The Miller racing cars were a way for Durant to promote the first Durant-built Locomobile model, the Junior 8. The two purpose-built cars were based on the 'stock' Miller 91 but with various differences throughout.

This particular example is chassis number 8. It was driven by Cliff Durant at the 1926 Indianapolis 500, where it wore racing number 9. It qualified 11th and was driven 41 laps during the race before Durant handed over driving duties to Eddie Hearne. After 61 laps, the car was forced to retire due to a fuel leak. The car continued to race during the 1926 season, driven by Hearne.

After the 1926 season, Durant dissolved his team. Harry Hartz took both Locomobile Junior 8 Specials to California to sell on his behalf. It was acquired by Cliff Woodbury for the Boyle Valve Special team of Millers, where it was driven by Fred Comer, Ralph Hepburn, Russ Snowberger, and Billy Arnold, through 1929, including three further competitions at Indianapolis.

During a race at the New York State Fairgrounds, the engine was damaged. The car was then sold to the mechanic and team owner Clarence Tarbet of Culver City, California.

For the 1930 season, the car continued to race under the Boyle Valve Sponsorship, driven initially by Chet Gardner and later by Fred Frame. Frame had tremendous success with the car, including multiple top-five finishes and no fewer than eleven 1st Overalls during 1930.

The car would continue to race for many years to come. Its last known entry into competition was at Silvergate Speedway in 1955.

Les Spriegel purchased the car from Dudley Samuels. At the time, the car had sprint car bodywork and a Riley engine. The next owner was Joe Gemsa, who purchased it at some point in the 1940s. It would remain in his care for four decades, where it was occasionally shown, carrying #43 and identified as the Orange Blossom Special.

It was purchased in 1986 by Ron Cameron's California Sportscars and sold the following year to Dan McLoughlin. Sam and Emily Mann add it to their impressive collection in 2008. A restoration had been started but not completed. It retained its original frame, and by that point, it had a later and more powerful Miller Marine engine. A complete restoration, which included the acquisition of a correct, original Miller 91 engine and a few additional parts directly from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, brought the car back to its former glory. The original body was recreated to the original 1926 Indianapolis design.

The car was shown in 2013 at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, where it earned a Best in Class in the special Miller class. It has never been in wheel-to-wheel competition since its restoration was completed. It has been driven in several Milwaukee Mile weekend Miller meets.

This car was built upon orders from William Durant's Locomobile Co. to serve to highlight Durant's recent acquisition of the company and call attention to the brand.

It was driven by many of the most prominent drivers of the period, first by son Cliff Durant, then Eddie Herme, Ralph Hepburn, Russ Snowberger, Billy Arnold, Fred Frame, and others.

It competed at Indianapolis in 1926, 1927, 1928, and 1929, finishing 24th, 24th, 7th, and 8th, respectively and at numerous other tracks around the country in 1930. Late in 1930, it was sold to Francis Quinn, who raced it extensively on the West Coast and won the South West Coast Championship in 1930 and numerous other races with this car.

It was later modified into a Sprint car configuration and continued to race into the early 1960s. It is thought to have had the longest career of any of the Miller cars.
