The vehicle is one of 10 pre-production chassis specially modified by shortening the chassis, increasing the 260 cubic-inch engine to a 302 cubic-inch engine, adding 3 carburetors (Ford Engineering) and designing and fabricating a two passenger coupe body in fiberglass. It was designed by Vince Gardner, and built by Detroit Tube for Ford.
The car was shown by dealers on a tour throughout the U.S. In early 1965, it was stolen by Gardner after the tour as he believed Ford would crush it. It was walled-up in a warehouse in Inkster, Michigan and not discovered for many months. After the insurance company paid for its loss, Aetna stored it at their headquarters (outside) until it was purchased by one of their executives and subsequently sold to the current owner.
