1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Coupe

Duane Winkel, the original owner/driver of this car got the bug for racing in 1968. Seeing Mark Donohue, George Follmer, Sam Posey and Peter Revson at the inaugural Trans Am race at Meadowdale Raceway fueled his desire to run with the big dogs. With help from his race partner Al Wilson of Wilson Chevrolet, Duane prepared this early production 1968 Camaro Z/28, added a stout roll cage and the necessary safety equipment and began racing in his local SCCA region. In 1970, at Road America with his crew in tow, Duane made his Trans Am debut and competed against the same big dogs he saw in 1968.

Qualifying in a field of 36, Duane lasted two laps before an unexpected DNF.

Despite a shaky start, Duane continued his grassroots efforts thru the early seventies finishing as high as 11th and two 15th places while participating in 10 Trans Am races at tracks throughout the mid-west, east coast including Sanair in Canada.

A beautiful and well-built car, Duane and Al's dreams of beating the 'factory' cars with their professional drivers and teams never materialized.

After the glory days of Trans Am this car evolved with the sport as many others did. From the mid-1970's to the late 1980's this Camaro participated in many regional SCCA and IMSA races in GT1 and A-Sedan classes. Today it is maintained in its original T/A configuration and driven in Historic Trans Am Series.
