1946 Chevrolet Fleetmaster Navigation
Swiss-born Louis-Joseph Chevrolet found fame racing Buicks prior to becoming co-founder of the Chevrolet Motor Car Company in 1911 with William C. Durant. In the years following, Louis and his younger brothers, Arthur and Gaston, went on to further racing glory, including an Indy 500 win by Gaston in 1920.
Durant's colorful career included founding and then being ousted from General Motors, only to return several years later, and adding Chevrolet to the growing stable of GM brands. Positioned to compete with Ford's popular Model T, it soon became GM's highest-volume brand and remained so to this day. Chevrolet's soon-to-be iconic 'bowtie' badge debuted at the New York Auto Show in 1914 and became one of the most recognizable brand symbols in history.
Passenger car production stopped during WWII as Detroit retooled to become the Arsenal of Democracy. Following the war, Chevrolet reverted to its 1942 model year tooling to restart the dormant passenger car business. The Fleetmaster was Chevrolet's middle trim level at the time and came in a variety of body styles including a two-door sport coupe, a town sedan, and a convertible. The 'Blue Flame' overhead-valve, inline six-cylinder with 216.5 CID and 90 horsepower provided the power to a three-speed, column-shift, manual transmission. Optional extras included two grades of radios, heater and defroster, fog lamps, spotlight, wheel trim rings, and a cowl-mounted windshield washer.
This car had been restored by the previous owner who lovingly cared for it for over fifty years.
