1959 Cadillac Series Sixty Special Fleetwood Navigation
Cadillac was formed from the remnants of the Henry Ford Company after Henry Ford departed. Henry M. Leland of Leland & Faulconer Manufacturing Company persuaded the remaining partners to continue the automobile business using Leland's proven 1-cylinder engine. On August 22, 1902, the company was renamed the Cadillac Automobile Company. The Cadillac's biggest selling point was precision manufacturing and reliability based on winning the British Dewar Trophy for the most important advancement of the year in the automobile industry. General Motors acquired the company in 1909. By the late-30s, the styling was also among Cadillac's advantages.
The 1959 Cadillac epitomized the peak of GM's Harley Earl's obsession with chrome and tailfins. The tailfins had become an icon of 1950s American culture. The 60 Special six-passenger, four-window sedan was the essence of Cadillac that year. The exterior featured a side-mounted dummy air-scoop on the rear fender and a thin chrome bead that ran from the front fender back to the rear bumper and then forward again to the front wheel well. It is powered by a 390 CID V8 with three carburetors producing 345 horsepower and prices started at $6,233.
The current owner acquired this car from the original owner, Dorothy Bush of Pennsylvania, in 1988. It has never been restored and the odometer shows only 18,985 miles.
