The Essex was introduced in 1918 and was a moderately priced car. It was part of the Hudson Motor Company and is credited with beginning the trend away from open-bodied cars. The cars were very dependable and won several hill climbing challenges including the 1923 Pikes Peak run.
For 1932, the Series E Essex featured many changes, both visual and mechanical - along with a mid-year name change. It was the first use of Tell-Tale lights on the instrument panel, also known as idiot lights. 1932 featured Essex's also had a Ride Control knob to adjust the suspension. The six-cylinder, 193.1 cubic-inch engine displaced 193.1 cubic inches and offered 70 horsepower. The steel used for the engine block was of such hardness that valve seat inserts were not used. The engine was mated to a three-speed sliding gear transmission and was fitted with Bendix mechanical brakes on four wheels. Buyers had the choice of either a wooden spoke or wire wheels. In the front of the car were a V-shaped radiator and single-piece bumper. There were curved windshield pillars, a rounded rear body contour, and modern styling.
The list of standard equipment included a 'Quick-vision' instrument panel with tell-tale oil and generator signals.
The Series E name was altered from its original Greater Essex Super-Six to Essex Super-Six Pacemaker. It would end the year simply as the Essex Pacemaker when the Essex Standard Series was introduced in May of 1932.
The current owner purchased it in 1983 from the second owner. The original owner had kept the license plates from 1937 through 1953, the last time it was run for many years. The owner's son spent over two years bringing the car to its current state.
