2013 Nissan Leaf Hatchback

When the Nissan Leaf five-seat hatchback hit the market for 2011, it was the first production battery-electric vehicle (BEV) from a major market since GM's low-volume 1997-99 EV1 two-seater. Compared to GM's Chevrolet Volt extended range electric (EREV), it has a lower price but the usual BEV disadvantages of limited range and long re-charge times.

Entering its third year or production, it boasts important upgrades for 2013, including improved energy efficiency (and therefore range) due to better aerodynamics and enhanced regenerative braking; addition of a new, lower-priced base S model; added features and options for the SL model, including leather trim and 17-inch alloy wheels; and a new available 6.6 kW onboard charger that cuts 220V charging time nearly in half (to about four hours).

With 107 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque from its 80kW AC synchronous electric motor, the Leaf is practical and fun to drive. When equipped with a quick-charge port, it can be charged to 80 percent of full capacity in 30 minutes with a DC fast charger. The charge port is under a small door on its nose, with a new light and door-lock feature added for 2013. As of March, 2013, more than 23,000 Leafs had been sold in the U.S. and nearly 60,000 worldwide. Both LEAF and its lithium-ion battery packs are now assembled in Smyrna, Tennessee.
