1931 Buick Series 60 Navigation
In order to encourage more car manufacturers to compete in the Indianapolis 500 race, then dominated by Duesenberg- and Miller-powered cars, the organizers promulgated the 'junk formula' in 1931 banning superchargers and allowing more variety in engine displacement and configuration.
This 1931 Buick 8-60 Indianapolis race Car was built as a tribute to the car Red Shafer built that became one of the successful early cars taking advantage of the new rules. The original car finished 12th in 1931 and 11th in 1932. 'Stubby' Stubblefield drove it to a 5th place finish in 1933 and it finished 6th in 1934 with Al Miller at the wheel. In 1935 Stubblefield was back driving the car but both he and his mechanic were killed when it crashed. The current owners of this car competed in The Great Race for many years in a 1941 Packard and a 1956 Thunderbird but purchased this Buick 8-60 racer from the estate of the late Malcolm Bauer (an export on 1931 Buicks) to be more 'in the spirit' of The Great Race.
The team finished 6th in the Sportsman Classic of the Great Race in 2011 and 3rd in the 2012 event.
