Hardtop
It started inauspiciously enough; in 1983 the Pontiac Buggy Company began building carriages. It grew but the imminent ascendance of the nascent horseless carriage industry weighed on management and they launched the Oakland Motor Car Company. William Durant, dealer-maker par excellence, folded Oakland into the growing General Motors portfolio in 1909 and in 1926 Oakland created Pontiac as a lower-priced option.

Pontiac prospered; Oakland didn't. Pontiac survived the Great Depression; Oakland didn't. By 1953 Pontiac's once robust sales were stalled. The culprit? Dated styling. 'Bunkie' Knudsen arrived to breathe life into the beleaguered brand and eliminated long standing styling cues like the venerable chrome 'suspenders.' He also supported motorsports; a focus that continued through the 1960s. The Grand Prix nameplate appeared for 1962, a Catalina coupe with minimal chrome and sporty bucket seats and a center console. Product planners also took advantage of GM's numerous engine options, even offering race-ready Super Duty and 'street' versions of the fearsome 421. Tri-power was added the next year. For 1964, the Grand Prix received just minor appearance changes; a revised grille, new 'GP' logos, and new taillights.

This car rumbles with a factory 421 CID tri-power. The original owner stored it for over 40 years but sold it in 2009. The new owner undertook a complete frame-off restoration but in 2011, as his health declined, sold off his collection.
