The Porsche 356 1600 Super Sport was a sports car produced from 1948 through 1965. It was Porsche's first production automobile. The 356 name denotes that it was Porsche's 356th project. The 356 was the first production sports car bearing the Porsche name. It was the cornerstone of the Dr. Ferdinand Porsche empire, as well as one of the most enduring sports car icons ever created.
At the 1955 Frankfurt Auto Show, Porsche introduced a new line of cars with such a broad range of refinements that it was given a new designation: 356A. It would be just three months before American forces still occupying Germany under the Marshall Plan would return the original brick Werk 1 facility to Porsche after 10 years, and designers and engineers would reclaim it as their home.
Work had been progressing on a new engine that would allow for increasing displacement sizes in the years to come. Chassis development, performed on the Black 356 mule known as 'Ferdinand,' brought about more durable and precise suspension and steering. Smaller diameter and wider 15-inch wheels and tires were also adopted.
The best-known and sportiest convertible model is the 356 'Speedster', introduced in late 1954 after Max Hoffman, the sole US importer of Porsches, advised the company that an affordable open-top version could sell well in the American market. With its low, raked windshield (which could be removed for weekend racing), bucket seats, and minimal folding top, the Speedster was an instant hit, especially in Southern California. Production of the Speedster peaked at 1,171 cars in 1957.
The 1600CC Speedster engine was upgraded with improved sealing, higher compression, a forged crank, and cast intake passages fed by Solex carburetors.
The Speedster, with minimal equipment and few options, was priced at $2,995. The seats were simple and the top was rather small. Side curtains were used instead of roll-up windows. Free of the 356 Cabriolet's traditional appointments, Porsche counted on the Speedster's lower price and decidedly sportier character to generate sales.
The Speedster was capable of exceeding 100 mph, and could race from zero-to-sixty mph in the ten-second range.
