Sold for $209,000 at 2005 The Monterey Sports and Classic Car Auction.
Sold for $649,000 at 2014 Gooding & Company - The Scottsdale Auction.
The Alfa Romeo 1900 Series, engineered by Orazio Satta, was the company's first model built on a standardized production line with unitized construction and available left-hand drive. It would quickly evolve into the short-wheelbase 1900 C, with the 'C' representing corto or short. The more-powerful 1900 TI followed in 1951 which was followed in 1953 by the 1900 Super and 1900 TI Super, also known as the 1900 SS or Super Sprint.

The 'C SS' was a very rare breed which combined the short chassis with a racing-specification engine, gearbox, and revised final-drive ratios, plus 'Alfin' self-adjusting brakes. The five-speed manual gearbox had synchromesh on the second, third, and fourth gears.

In racing, the 1900C SS competed at such legendary events as the Targa Florio, Stella Alpina, and Mille Miglia.

In June of 1959, after nearly a decade of production, the 1900 Series came to an end. In total, more than 21,000 examples were built and just 854 of those were the 1900 C SS.

This Alfa Romeo 1900 C SS Coupe is a one-off example with coachwork by Ghia. The first owner was San Francisco restaurateur Al Williams who paid $23,000 for his new car. Mr. Williams requested that the car have a disappearing, rear-folding occasional seat for the family's Great Dane. Ghia requested that once the car was complete, it was to be shown at the Los Angeles International Motor Revue.

The car has several important design cues that would later be found on future cars, such as the C-pillar louvers later seen on the 250 GT Tour de France Berlinetta.

Upon completion during late summer 1954, the car was shipped from Genoa, Italy to the port of Oakland, California. Mr. Williams displayed the car at the December 1954 Los Angeles International Motor Revue, where it received Best of Show honors.

In 1957, the car was sold to Peggy Tush of Whidbey Island, Washington, who would care for the car for many years. Subsequent owner Paul Forbes commissioned a complete concours-quality restoration. The work was completed in 1996. Upon completion, the car was shown at the 1998 Pebble beach concours d'Elegance where it earned an award in the Grand Touring class. In 2001, the Alfa Romeo was sold via Emeryville, California's Fantasy Junction to Dennis Gibbs of Castro Valley. At the 2005 Amelia Island Concours, the car was awarded the Most Outstanding Alfa Romeo.

The current owner acquired the car after its appearance at the April 2012 La Jolla Concours d'Elegance where it won a class award. It won People's Overall Choice Award at the Festival of Cars in Oregon in 2012 and Best in Class as well as Best in Show nomination at Concorso Italiano in 2013.

The car has its factory-original engine, gearbox, rear axle, original alloy coachwork and sub-panels, and other as-built components, including the chassis and suspension.
