This 1904 Mercedes 40/45 was shown at the Pebble Beach Concours weekend in the Gooding & Company exhibit as part of the Otis Chandler Collection that was to be sold at a later date. It is powered by a 6.7-liter T-Head engine that produces 40/45 horsepower. It has a double chain drive and a four-speed gearbox. The double chain driven engine provided an extra amount of protection, as chains often broke in those days. Some marque's had switched to shaft driven engines as early as 1900. The custom coachwork was done by Frederick R. Wood & Sons and is one of the greatest early examples of the Mercedes heritage. At auction, the car fetched $2.25 million, a true tribute to the beauty of this automobile and its significance in history.
It is a beautiful vehicle with red leather interior, dual side mounted tires, and large, artillery style wheels.
The merger between Benz and Daimler did not transpire until 1923, at which time the company became known as Mercedes-Benz.By Daniel Vaughan | Sep 2013
