1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Zagato Navigation
Approximately 40 Alfa Romeo Sprint Zagato Coda Troncas were built between 1961 and 1963, and they were very successful race cars in Europa and in the United States. This car is one of the first Kamm-tail Coda Troncas built, and it was initially owned and raced by Elio Zagato. The Zagato factory improved the aerodynamics as subsequent cars were built, and the last Coda Tronca, with a much lower front profile, was prepared for the 1963 Le Mans 24 Hours. This car was modified with the same low front by Zagato between 1961 and 1964 and it also received Alfa TZ-style Campagnolo alloy rims and revised instruments. These modifications were often done by serious racers of Sprint Zagatos to gain a competitive advantage.
The Sprint Zagato is the ultimate development of Alfa Romeo's legendary Giulietta. Featuring lightweight bodywork by Zagato and specially tuned engines the cars were very fast, topping 120 mph with their 1.3-liter engines. Approximately 40 examples of the Alfa Romeo Sprint Zagato Coda Tronca were built between 1961 and 1963.
This 1961 car was first owned and raced by Elio Zagato himself. The last Coda Tronca built in 1963 had a much lower front profile in preparation for that year's Le Mans 24 Hours. In order to stay competitive, the car was returned to the Zagato factory in 1963 to have its front modified in the same way, and the two cars raced alongside each other at Monza in 1964.
