The Carrera RS was Porsche's initial racing homologation version of the 911. Its ducktail spoiler and wider rear wheels were both firsts for the company. These, along with a displacement increase, from 2.4 liters to 2.7, gave it significant power and aerodynamic advantages over the 911S. Carreras dominated road racing and rallies for several years.
As Porsche's competition ventures increased in scope as well as success, the 911 was developed by the factory into specially built race cars. The year 1973 saw the campaigning of the 2.7-liter 911 RSR, and for homologation purposes the public was offered the 2.7 RS. Built in limited numbers, the 2.7 RS offered fantastic performance above and beyond that of the contemporary 2.4-liter 911S. The 2.7 RS is also noteworthy as the first production 911 to sport a rear tail spoiler, in this case the shorter ducktail.
Chassis #635 was built in February 1973 and delivered to its original owner in Naples shortly thereafter. Later, painted black and given a lightweight interior, it was imported to America in the early 1980's. The current owner acquired the car in 2009 and commissioned a three year restoration. The restoration was the subject of a feature in the May, 2013 Excellence Magazine.
