Porsche launched the groundbreaking turbo, all-wheel-drive 959 without undertaking its certification for the USA. Prior to the passing of the 1999 'Show and Display' law which allowed relatively easy importation, a few 'gray market' cars were imported as display pieces. Under 'S&D', cars can be licensed provided they are modified to meet 1987-era emissions. A catalytic converter and a re-chip can see to that. Baur built 337 cars for Porsche between 1987 and 1988. At launch they were claimed to be the 'world's fastest street legal production car.' Just not in the USA.
