The new 230SL, codenamed the W113, placed more of an emphasis on safety and comfort than the high-performance and exotic 300SL found in the Mercedes-Benz lineup of a few years prior. The four-cylinder engine found in the 190 was gone and all models were given a six-cylinder unit fitted with a Bosch, fuel-injection system. These were the first Mercedes-Benz automobiles to be given an alternator as standard equipment. They also had an independent suspension setup and servo-assisted disc brakes in the front with drums in the rear.
The design was classic Mercedes, with the broad front grille of the 300SL. They were available as a roadster, roadster/coupe, or pure coupe. The roof line - called the 'pagoda roof' was designed by Paul Bracq and Bela Barenyi. It features raised sides and a lower center panel instead of curving conventionally upwards toward the middle.
Production of the 230SLs continued until the debut of the 250SL at the 1967 Geneva Show. Horsepower would remain the same, though the new 2,496cc engine offered more torque for better acceleration. The coupe version was dropped and the wheel rims increased from 5.5 to 6 inches. Four-wheel disc brakes became standard. The final version was the 280SL and it made its public debut early in 1968. These had a 2778cc engine with a horsepower rating of 180. The interiors were upgraded, along with many other enhancements and refinements. Production of the 280SL would continue until March of 1971, with a total of 23,885 being producing.
This 280SL is finished Dark Green (M-B Code 268) with a M-B Tex interior in Cognac. It is believed to be a two-owner car. The car has two tops, the matching body-color hardtop and the convertible top in tan. There is a Becker AM-FM stereo radio. It was not delivered with air conditioning, though a correct Mercedes-Benz air-conditioning system has been installed.
