1996 Porsche 911 GT2 Coupe

  • Chassis Number: WP0ZZZ99ZTS393099
The World Sportscar Championship came to an end in 1992 and its demise was followed by the introduction of the BPR Global GT Endurance Series. Porsche responded with their GT2 competition car based on the new twin-turbo 993. A number of road-going 993 GT2s were built for homologation purposes, the factory-built race car was developed directly from the Turbo S LM-GT of 1993.

The 993 GT2 retained much of the classis 911 form, with the addition of large GRP fender flares, a prominent front air dam, and a large, adjustable rear wing with special openings on either side to feed the turbocharged engine. Power came from the purpose-built M64/81 engine with twin K24 turbochargers, larger intercoolers, high-lift camshafts, an upgraded valve train, a modified exhaust system, and map-controlled Motronic fuel injection. Output was rated at 450 horsepower and 479 ft-lbs of torque. All GT2's were strictly rear-wheel drive. The suspension was virtually the same as the road-going GT2, but given special springs, shock absorbers, a shock tower brace, and adjustable anti-roll bars. The brakes featured four-piston calibers and ventilated discs and a race-tuned four-channel anti-lock brake setup. A 100-liter FT3 fuel cell and BBS three-piece alloy wheels were also standard.

In an effort to keep weight low, Porsche made the front lid and doors from aluminum and used thing-gauge glass for all windows except the windshield. All non-essential items were removed from the interior. They were completely stripped to the bare tub and purposefully equipped with a full welded-in roll cage, a single racing bucket seat, a six-point safety harness, a fire suppression system, and air jacks. In race trim, the car weighed just 2,535 lbs.

The cars were campaigned by wealthy amateurs and well-established private teams. Between 1995 and 1997, the 993 GT2 dominated international sports car racing, taking the GT2 title in the BPR World Endurance Championship, IMSA Sports Car Championship, SCCA World Challenge, and the German ADAC GT Cup.

Total production of the GT2 series, including all road and racing variants, was no more than 270 examples.

This example is a late-production example and is a full factory-prepared race car fitted with the last engine in the serial number range established for 1995. The car is finished in Speed Yellow. It was delivered through Porsche Motorsport North America and was sold to an East coast private collector and never raced. Since 2007, the car has remained in the care of two prominent private collectors.

Currently, the car has been driven less than 30 miles from new.
