Pete Lovely opened Pete Lovely Volkswagen in Fife, Washington in 1954. Like many dealers of the time, Mr. Lovely was heavily involved in racing. In 1955 he won the F-Modified SCCA Championship in the famous Pooper, a Porsche-Cooper Special. He repeated the result the very next year, enhancing his notoriety even further. He was eventually asked to drive for team owners John Edgar, John Fitch, and Jack Nethercutt. In 1959, Pete was asked to join Team Lotus and was given the opportunity to race in Grand Prix events.
During the many decades running the dealership, countless Volkswagens came and went. In 1977, while the final Beetle Sedans were being sold, one example caught Mr. Lovely's eye. The car was finished in Silver with a black interior. On July 26th of 1977, the Importer's and Manufacturer's Statement of Origin was issued to Pete Lovely Volkswagen for this Beetle.
Upon arriving at the dealership, the car was given its window sticker and dealership's license plate frame and inserts extolling 'Another Lovely Volkswagen' both front and rear. It had an optional sunroof and leatherette upholstery and carried a sticker price of $3,949. The car never had a chance to sell as it went directly into Lovely's private collection.
The car received four dealer-installed accessories, including four chrome wheels and radial tires. In June of 1983, a soft-guard cover was ordered for the car and in May 1985, a new battery was installed.
In early 2013, the car was purchased from Pete Lovely's family, showing just 87 miles from new. Though millions of Beetles were produced, only a limited few can claim to be essentially brand-new.
The car is powered by a 1,585cc overhead valve flat four-cylinder engined with an Air-Flow Control Fuel injection system. There is a four-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel Hydraulic disc brakes.By Daniel Vaughan | Dec 2013
