The Packard Model 30 was in production from 1907 through 1912. They were powered by a 431.9 cubic-inch T-head four-cylinder engine offering 30 horsepower at 650 RPM. The power produced by the engine is where the name of the Packard 30 is derived. The modern reading of the horsepower produced by the engine would be closer to 60 BHP. They had a three-speed transaxle and wooden wheels. During the six years of production, the wheelbase was extended, larger wheels were installed, and a variety of body styles were created.
This Packard Model 30 is believed to have been purchased new by Laura Campbell Sloo Whitney of New Orleans, Louisiana. It was eventually given to or inherited by the family's chauffeur in New Orleans, and in 1947, it was spotted there in a local carriage house by Frank Franklin, who was, at the time, a 19-year-old college student. After some negotiation, Franklin was able to arrange an even trade: the Packard Limousine for a bottle of Cutty Sark.
Over the next five days, Mr. Franklin drove his new acquisition home to Houston. It remained in his care in central Texas for over 60 years, prior to its recent acquisition out of long-term museum display by the present owner.
The car is in original condition. The carpet and paint are all original; only the upholstery on the driver's seat is not original, as it required correct replacement leather years ago. The car still wears its original 1914 New York and 1915 Louisiana license plates.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2016
