Porsche had their 911 and Ferrari had their Dino 246. Ferruccio Lamborghini realized that his company required a competitive counterpoint and a less expensive alternative to the Miura and the Espada. Lamborghini's new car was designed by Marcello Gandini and was shaped by Bertone. It had a 2+2 configuration and an overhead-cam V8 engine. Bob Wallace helped with designing the four-wheel independent McPherson strut suspension.
The new Lamborghini, named the Urraco, made its debut at the 1970 Turin Motor Show. It was one of the very few automobiles to have two cars displayed at its introduction, at two different stands. A white model was on display at the Bertone booth while a bright orange example was at the Lamborghini display. The production version reached the public three years later and would continue to be built for six years.
This example has the later P300 engine, which is the largest installed by the factory in this model. It features svelte European-style chrome bumpers, and the exterior is finished in black over a two-tone blue interior.
This example is believed to be one of only six 'French wing' examples. As such, it doesn't have the louvers over the rear glass.
The overhead-cam V8 engine displaces 2996cc and produces 265 horsepower. There is a five-speed manual transmission and four-wheel disc brakes.By Daniel Vaughan | Jan 2014
