The Chrysler Newport was introduced as a way to increase sales and bring Chrysler vehicles to a new segment of the automotive community. The Newport name, formerly applied to a hardtop body style, was re-introduced and applied to this new series. Body styles included a sedan, convertible, hardtop coupe, hardtop sedan, and a 6- and 9-passenger station wagon. Pricing began at $2,960 and rose to over $3,620 for the 9-passenger station wagon. The convertible was listed at $3,445. The most popular body style was the sedan which saw 34,370 examples produced. There were 1,571 examples of the 9-passenger station wagon, 2,135 of the convertible, and 9,405 of the 2-door hardtop coupe.
The Newport rested on the previous year's Windsor wheelbase. In the front were a fine horizontal bar setup, a straight bumper, and slanted headlamps. In the back, the tail lamps were relocated into the deck lid latch panel and the tailfins ended in chromed inserts with small backup lights.
Power was provided by a 361 CID V8 overhead valve engine that offered 265 horsepower.
This particular car has a TorqueFlite transmission, power steering, power brakes, dealer air conditioning system converted to 134, AM radio, heater, remote driver side mirror, tinted glass, and full wheel covers.
This is a three owner car. It was purchased new on May 5th of 1961 in Grants Pass, Oregon.By Daniel Vaughan | Mar 2014
