1986 Porsche 962 Coupe

The Porsche 956 Group C chassis was banned from racing in the United States until Porsche agreed to make changes, the most important being relocating the footbox to behind the front wheel axis for crash protection. The FIA adopted IMSA rules and a new Porsche 962 entered the 1984 Daytona 24 Hours.

Haywood and Foyt met in 1987 when Preston Henn invited Haywood to share a 935 with Foyt for the Paul Revere 250 at Daytona.

'I didn't think the relationship would ever work out,' Haywood recalled, 'But he was a lot of fun to be around.' When Foyt bought his 962, Haywood got the call and drove several races with Foyt.

He remembered the challenging driver swaps. 'The seat worked more to my advantage. When we switched drivers at Daytona, I fumbled his belts when he got in. I shouted, 'I gave you a nice lead, Don't blow it!' and slammed the door shut. As soon as he blasted out of the pits - belts not quite hooked - his lights began to flicker. I think the IMSA officials were too afraid of him to black flag him. We won that race. I think he respected me.'

This is the final of three 962 chassis built by Holbert Racing. As raced by A.J. Foyt in 1987-88, the 962 model dominated international endurance racing throughout the 1980s. With a top speed of well over 200 mph, the 962 was a car 'without vice' according to Le Mans winner Derek Bell.

Foyt raced #03 eight times, finishing 4th in 1987's 24 Hours of Daytona and 6th at the Miami Grand Prix. The car retired from the 12 Hours of Sebring that year following a pit lane accident and was rebuilt, fishing 4th in the Palm Beach Grand Prix.

In 1988, Foyt Racing once again entered what was called the '40 Hours of Florida' - Dayton, Sebring, Miami, and Palm Beach. He finished 6th at Daytona and 4th at Sebring.

Foyt liked the '40 hours of Florida,' the unofficial name given to the four Florida endurance events that began with Daytona and carried on to Miami, Sebring, and Palm Beach. In two years - 1987 and 1988 - he never won, finishing fourth three times in eight races. Foyt paid the crew and Brumos maintained his car.

Hurley Haywood on Palm Beach, 1988: 'Every race was maximum drama. A.J. got into it with an Italian driver who sent him into the tire wall. He was so pissed, he pulled his car off the track, spun it around to face oncoming traffic and waited for the guy. He missed him by a mile. Twice. You could hear him swearing in Miami Beach.'

In all, Foyt racked up 7,396.61 racing miles before he traded the 962 to Brumos in 1990 for a Ferrari. In addition to Foyt, the car was raced by Hurley Haywood, Danny Sullivan, Al Unser (Sr & Jr.) Davy Jones, Elliott Forbes-Robinson and Rob Dyson.
