Assembled in the Porsche Factory Race Department, this car was delivered to Herb Wetanson (Wetson) and entered in several 1968 Trans Am races. One of the most successful early 911 race cars it finished 4th overall and 1st in GT class at 24 Hours of Dayton in 1969 less than two months later finished 13th overall and 2nd in class at 12 Hours of Sebring. After the 1971 season, the car was put into long-term storage where it remained, undisturbed, for the next 18 years. In December 1969 it was rescued from storage and restored for vintage racing. The car was again put to rest a short five years later. It was purchased by the present owner in 2011. The car was recently restored to the 1969 24 Hours of Daytona configuration.
Herb Wetenson, Bruce Jennings, Tony Adamowicz and the Light Ivory 1968 911L almost had a dream race come true; but it started with a nightmare. Herb had special ordered the 1968 911L which was hand built by the Porsche Racing Department. A 2.0-liter maximum performance competition engine along with a Rally Kit with twin driving lights, a Sports Kit (that included heavy-duty shocks and torsion bars, Fuch wheels, 100 liter fuel tank, LSD, front and rear sway bars and a roll bar) car also came with undercoat delete. Wetenson's plan was to put Jennings in the car and contest the under 2.0 liter TransAm Championship.
After receiving the car from Porsche, the car was to Mac Tilton, who had been known to work wonders on Tony's 2.0 Liter TransAm Championship winning car. Tilton did his magic and then the car was sent to Gerry McCarthy. McCarthy, still known today for his mechanics and race prep on Porsches, prepared the car for the 1969 running of the 24 Hours of Daytona. Friday morning's practice, the nightmare starts; Tony's practice was supposed to be routine with one exception - Tony was to come in the pits and the crew was to do a four tire change and brake pads. Tony came in as ordered, the car went up in the air. Believing that the stop was too short for a brake change, Tony was ordered to leave, not realizing the pads indeed were changed and did not pump the brakes in preparation for their use. Tony reaches the pit out of 90 mph (no pit speed during those days) applies the brakes and they go to the floor. The car spins and backed into the retaining wall. Heavy damage to the rear end of the car results in an immediate trip to Peter Gregg's Brumos body shop. An all-night effort results in the car being repaired enough to go back to the Speedway Sunday morning.
The car was able to race and continued on; at the Checkered Flag on Sunday at 3 pm the car was 1st in Class, a little more than an hour behind the winning Lola of Donahue.
