1913 American Tourist Navigation
The American Car Company, of Indianapolis, produced Underslung models between 1905 and 1914. These cars were very low to the ground and sporty appearing, compared to most brass-era cars.
The low and racy appearance was caused by mounting the frame under the suspension, the opposite of most automobiles, and using 40-inch high wheels. This allowed the engine and transmission to sit with the perimeter of the frame instead of on top of it, lowering the center of gravity for improved handling. They had the unusual characteristic of having the top of the radiator below the top of the fender line.
The Underslung was the brainchild of Fred Tone and carried a 476 cubic-inch four-cylinder engine, producing 60 horsepower. The 1913 model was the first year that electric starters and lights were offered.
