1913 American Tourist Tourer

The Underslung models built by the American Automobile Company of Indianapolis, Indiana had an innovative design that placed the frame rails below the axles. This configuration allowed the car to have a significantly reduced center of gravity. Oversized wheels were used to solve the problems of ground clearance issues. The low chassis and oversized wheels gave the Underslung models a unique and distinct appearance.

This particular example is an American Underslung Model 34A Tourist Four Passenger Touring. It has been given a documented restoration which was completed in 2008 and subsequently received an Antique Automobile Club of America National First Prize and Senior. The car has been shown on a few occasions in the last couple of years, at Hershey where it won the AACA National Chocolate Town Trophy in 2013, and at the Amelia Island Concours in 2014 as part of the Underslung display. In 2017 it was shown at the Keels and Wheels Concours d'Elegance where it won Best in Show for an American car.

This car is powered by a 318 cubic-inch T-head four-cylinder engine producing 48 horsepower. There is a four-speed manual transmission, underslung leaf spring suspension, and rear wheel hydraulic drum brakes.
