1978 McLaren M24B Monopoto

This McLaren was entered in the 1978 Indy 500 by 'team McLaren/First National City Travelers Checks', qualified by Johnny Rutherford at the 4th position and finishing 18th.

At the 1979 Indy 500 this car was entered at 'Team McLaren/Budweiser', again driven by Johnny Rutherford qualifying in the 8th position and finishing 18th.

In the 1981 Indy 500 this M24B was entered by 'Red Roof/Theodore Racing/Equip 66' and driven by Vern Schuppan, qualifying at the 18th starting position at 186.5 mph. He finished the race at 199.0 mph in third place behind winner Bobby Unser and an angry Mario Andretti for the most controversial Indy 500 in history.

In June 1981, at Pocono International Speedway, PA, entered by Vern Schuppan, the car failed to finish due to a loss of oil pressure.

The M24B was originally built and owned by McLaren International in 1978. The car was purchased by Vern Schuppan in the late 1980s. In August of 2000, the current owner acquired the car and fully restored the McLaren to its historic race trim.
