In the 1981 Indy 500 this M24B was entered by 'Red Roof/Theodore Racing/Equip 66' and driven by Vern Schuppan, qualifying at the 18th starting position at 186.5 mph. He finished the race at 199.0 mph in third place behind winner Bobby Unser and an angry Mario Andretti for the most controversial Indy 500 in history.
In June 1981, at Pocono International Speedway, PA, entered by Vern Schuppan, the car failed to finish due to a loss of oil pressure.
The M24B was originally built and owned by McLaren International in 1978. The car was purchased by Vern Schuppan in the late 1980s. In August of 2000, the current owner acquired the car and fully restored the McLaren to its historic race trim.
