1964 Meyers Manx Navigation
Bruce Meyer's Meyers Manx dune buggy is a small, recreationally oriented automobile designed initially for desert racing. Meyers is a California engineer, artist, boat builder, and surfer. It was produced by his Fountain Valley, CA Company from 1964 to 1971. They produced a form of car kits applied to shortened chassis of Volkswagen Beetles. The car line dominated dune racing in its time, breaking records immediately and was eventually released in street-oriented models.
New models inspired by the original Manx buggy have been produced by Meyers' operation, Meyers Manx, Inc. since 2000. The name and cat logo of this brand is derived from the Manx cat, by virtue of the tailless breed and the shortened vehicle's truncated 'stubbiness.'
This is Bruce Meyers first Manx, 'Old Red.' Meyers could claim to have invented the dune buggy, starting the beach buggy sub-culture, and promoting the surfing and California desert racing lifestyles. 'Old' Old Red is indeed the first fiberglass, Volkswagen Beetle-based (actually VW Transporter-based) dune buggy. But it did not use the Volkswagen platform. That came next with the first production batch in an effort to reduce cost by saving more of the donor Beetle. Bruce and Ted Mangels drove Old Red to several desert slalom racing victories. Their goal was to beat the motorcycles! Such competition eventually led to a fully organized desert racing series.
