Chevrolet's 427 V-8 engine has an 11.0:1 compression ratio, hot solid-lifter cam, free-flowing rectangular-port cylinder heads, a forged crank, a bulletproof cylinder block, and an official 425 horsepower rating. The regular production option or RPO L72 427/425 engine was very potent in the relatively lightweight Corvette, with high 12-second quarter-mile times and top speeds in excess of 150 mph.
The 427/425 Corvette was one of the fastest production cars built for 1966. They were a true high-performance bargain costing just $312.85 over the vehicle's base retail price when new. The known history of this car dates to 1971 in Anaheim, California, as evidenced by a pair of Mobile gasoline receipts found in the Corvette by subsequent owner Gary Bowden of Mount Pleasant in Ontario, Canada, who acquired it in 1975.
Mr. Bowden later stripped the body and refinished it with a base/clear system. It was given new bumpers and the original vinyl seat covers were replaced with leather. The L72 engine was removed for repainting and detailing. This car remained with Mr. Bowden until April 3, 2001, when he sold it to Brian S. Nelson, who imported the car to New York. At the August 2002 Corvettes at Carlisle event in Pennsylvania, the car was purchased by Ralph Scott. Mr. Scott and his brother Dave commenced on a total body-off-frame restoration in October of 2002.
Upon completion in March of 2003, the Corvette earned First Place under the National Council of Corvette Clubs judging at Carlisle that same year. In November of 2005, it was featured in Corvette Enthusiast magazine.
The car is currently fitted with a 3.70:1 Posi-Traction rear end, F41 heavy-duty suspension, J56 heavy-duty disc brakes, mandatory K66 transistorized ignition system, side-mounted exhaust pipes, leather upholstery, tinted glass, power windows, and knock-off wheels with Goldline tires.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2014
