Mercedes-Benz took the supercar world by storm in November of 2003 when they introduced their SLR McLaren. The car was developed in collaboration with the McLaren Technology centre, which, at the time, was partially owned by Mercedes. Together they combined the best aspects of supercars and grand tourers, creating a vehicle that could carry its occupants in luxury at speeds of 200 mph.
The V8 engine was placed as far back as possible in the chassis in order to improve the car's handling, giving the car a near-perfect weight distribution. With the help of a Lysholm-type twin-screw supercharger, the engine offers 17 horsepower at 6500 RPM. Zero-to-sixty took just 3.8 seconds and the quarter mile was achieved in just over 11 seconds. The top speed was rated at 206 MPH. The AMG Speedshift R transmission had three manual models, to satisfy any driver's need. Other technology included the Sensotronic 'brake by wire' system, carbon-ceramic disc brakes, and an automatic airbrake, which can bring the SLR to a screeching halt from 120 mph to a dead stop in less than 240 feet.
The exotic 'swing-wing' doors were hinged to the A-pillars rather than the roof itself. After being manually unlatched, the roof takes just 10 seconds to fold into a compartment behind the rear seats. Engineers worked their magic and were able to make the drop-top versions just as rigid as the coupe.
This McLaren SLR Roadster was produced in 2007 and is finished in Mercedes Crystal Laurite Silver Metallic with a red leather interior with a black convertible top. The car rides on iForged wheels and the odometer shows just over 11,500 miles.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2014
