1971 Ferrari 312 B2 Monoposto

  • Chassis Number: 5
The iconic Ferrari V-12 engine had run it's course by 1969. It was too bulky and heavy and was lacking in comparison to the Cosworth DFV. To address the situation for the 1970 season, Ferrari's brilliant designer Mauro Forghieri produced the flat 12 cylinder 'boxer' 3-litre engine and it was immediately apparent this was a very powerful engine - probably the most powerful in Formula 1. So strong was the design that it remained the Ferrari F1 engine until 1981 and garnered the Scuderia three World Championships for Niki Lauda and Jody Scheckter. Jacky Ickx tested the 312 B in 1971 and was so impressed he quit Brabham-Cosworth and rejoined Ferrari. He was the team's strongest driver and had reliability been better, he might well have scored more than the six wins he had in 312 B series Ferraris.
