The Porsche 911 S Coupe, apart from the Carrera RS, was the pinnacle of Porsche's lightweight sports cars from the early 1970s. 1973 marked the end of the 'long-hood, thin-bumper' period of Porsche design. The 1974 models would be given several additional safety features such as the five-mph safety bumpers and increased weight.
The 1973 'S' was powered by a 2.4-liter Type 911/53 engine that offered 190 horsepower at 6,500 RPM. The engine was bolted to a new Type 915 transmission, which offered stronger internals and a simplified shifting pattern. Front-end lift was reduced by a claimed 40% due to a new front chin spoiler.
For 1973, the 'S' model had a base price of just over $10,000 before any options were added.
This particular car is an early example of the F-Series, but on a unitized body and fitted with an electric sunroof at the factory. It has the competition-oriented M409 Sport Seat option, complete instrumentation, rack-and-pinion steering, and forged alloy Fuchs 6x15-inch wheels. The car has its original floor panels and matching-numbers engine and transmission. It has the original tool kit, jack, owner's manual, and Porsche-issues Certificate of Authenticity.
The car is finished in its original Special Order 335 Gemini Metallic paint, with a black leatherette interior, with the seats trimmed with black-and-white hounds-tooth cloth inserts.
The car has a 22.4-gallon gas tank and a dry weight of just over 2,500 pounds. It is one of just 1,430 made in total, and only 524 of those were designated for the U.S. market.By Daniel Vaughan | Jun 2014
