For 1968, Porsche responded to the influx of requests for a competition model with the introduction of aa lightweight, racing 911 L version fitted with the 9552 Rally Kit option. It is believed that just 28 examples with this feature fitted, with just 9 examples recorded to remain in modern time. Several of the cars stayed in Europe to be used in rally events, while some 15 were sent to US customers for racing in SCCA and TransAm competition.
These special 911 L models were European-specification L model fitted with the 901/30 engine, a roll bar, a limited-slip differential, lowered Koni suspension, a leather-covered steering wheel, and 'Porsche' rocker script. The sound deadening material and undercoating were removed, but otherwise were trimmed like a 912.
This example, chassis number 11810514, was one of the few cars built with the 901/30 engine in rally specification. It was finished in Tangerine 6809 and was delivered to VW-Auto-OY in Helsinki, Finland, for final delivery to Antti Aarnio-Wihuri, the principal of AAW Racing Team.
A full race record of this car does not exist, but it is believed to have been entered in the 1969 Tunturi Ralli in Finland, where Aarnio-Wihuri and Urpo Vihervaara finished 11th overall. It raced at the Porvoon Ralli by Kinnunen, followed by the 1969 Sadan Auton Ajot, where it earned a 5th overall and a class victory. It raced at the Helsingin Vauhtikisat and the Juhannus Ajot, and then competed in the Nordic Challenge Cup, where it won 3rd overall and 1st in class. In 1970, the 911 returned to the Tunturi Ralli finishing 11th overall and 1st in class. The last known competitive outing was at the Keimola 500 where it was driven to a 66th Place result.
This car remained unknown for decades until it resurfaced in Finland in recent years. At the time, it was in unrestored condition.
Since then, it has been imported to the United States. It has long since lost its original engine; the current owner rebuilt the 2.0-liter 911 S engine that was found disassembled with the car. The interior is original, including the proper sports seats and roll bar. The car is finished in its period livery, complete with a dash-mounted rally timer, hood-mounted driving lamps, as well as Shell, Michelin, and Pall Mall sponsorship.By Daniel Vaughan | Jun 2014
