1967 Lola T70 MKIII Coupe

  • Chassis Number: SL73/121/A
The Lola T70 was designed to accept an American V8 engine. They featured a monocoque chassis construction comprised of aluminum and steel for additional reinforcement. The suspension was comprised of double wishbones and coil springs over dampers. The front brakes were located just outside of the wheels.

The T70 was raced in Can-Am competition and in the capable hand of F1 World Champion John Surtees, the car was instantly successful. During the season, Surtees would win three of the six rounds of the newly formed Can-Am challenge and at the close of the season, was crowned champion.

With the success of the 70, Lola saw an opportunity to race in Group 4 competition. Racing rules required a minimum of 50 cars. By the close of 1966, over 40 examples had been built. To be eligible for Group 4 competition, modifications were required such as the installation of a windscreen and a roof. A new body was also required, a task reserved for Tony Southgate and Eric Broadley.

The new T70 MK3 Coupe was very aerodynamic, having been created with the help of a wind-tunnel. The new car was capable of racing as a Group 7 Spyder and a Group 4 Coupe.

Aston Martin saw an opportunity to use the T70 Coupe with power from a twin-cam V8 engine that was still under development, for an assault at Le Mans. The Aston Martin-powered T70s were not built in sufficient numbers as were the Chevrolet T70s, so the Aston-powered cars were forced to race in Group 6 competition. The cars competing in Group 6 were very competitive and highly evolved, which put the Aston Martin-powered cars at a disadvantage. The Aston cars were unreliable and underpowered. After an early retirement from LeMans, Aston Martin decided to end the program as well.
