1973 Shadow DN1

Don Nichol's AVS-Shadow team competed successfully in the North American Can-Am sports car series for two years before making the leap into Formula One in 1973 with sponsorship from unleaded fuel pioneer, Universal Oil Products. Don Nichol's enlisted the help of designer Tony Southgate, formerly with BRM, to design the elegant DN-1 which featured elegant and effective bodywork and a high degree of workmanship.

Jackie Oliver first used chassis number DN1-6A at the German Grand Prix in August of 1973 where he finished in eighth place. He retired early in Austria and then finished third at the Canadian grand Prix. Oliver raced the car once more before it was sold.

It raced briefly in the Shell G8 Championship during the 1976 season.

During the 1973 season, drivers Jackie Oliver and George Follmer earned nine points. They may have been able to score a few more points if they had better luck and a few breaks along the way.

Graham Hill's new Embassy-Hill team purchased DN-1's to run the 1973 season while designing and building their own car.
