The Ferrari Tipo 250 was introduced in 1954 and was the first true production car built by Ferrari. Over the decade that followed, approximately 2,500 Ferrari 250s were built (in various incarnations), ranging from the 250 GT California Spyder destined for American shores to the luxurious 250 GT Lusso. By the close of the 1950s, several other sports car manufacturers were offering attractive 2+2 models; Ferrari responded to this growing need for a four-seat grand touring car with their 250 GTE. At LeMans in 1960, the course marshal drove a 2+2 Ferrari, and by October of the same year, the 250 GTE was officially introduced to the public at the auto show in Paris. This new model was derived from the 250 GT and offered additional space by moving the pedals, seats, front floorboards, and engine forward. Coachwork was by Pininfarina who used steel for the body with aluminum doors, bonnet, and boot lid. Power was from a new Colombo-designed 2,953cc V12 engine, first introduced on the 250 GT and derived from the 250 MM. The engine was mated to a four-speed overdrive gearbox.
Production of the Ferrari 250 GTE lasted just a short period of time; after minor styling changes, the model was renamed to the 250 GT 2+2, which by late 1963 was replaced by the 330 America.
This Ferrari 250 GTE example was completed by the factory in January of 1963 and was delivered new to its first owner in Vicenza, Italy, two months later, finished in grey with a blue interior. In 1970, the car was exported to the United States and went through several changes of ownership in California before the engine was rebuilt by Modena Motors in 1989. The car had been in the same ownership since 1979; in 2004, it was sold to a new caretaker.
The current owner acquired the car out of New York. $60,000 was then spent to ensure the car was brought to perfect mechanical condition. Significant work was also performed on the electrical and braking systems as well.
In 2010, the car was offered for sale at the Automobiles of Amelia Island presented by RM Auctions where it was sold for $154,000, including the buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Jun 2014
