1935 Brewster Ford Navigation
Brewster & Company was a wholly owned subsidiary of Rolls-Royce of North America. To avoid the stigma of bankruptcy, it evolved into Springfield Manufacturing. President John Inskip's idea to avoid bankruptcy altogether was to offer four custom-built body styles on a Ford V-8 chassis: town car, limousine, convertible roadster, and convertible sedan, all carrying a $3,500 price tag. The cost was half the typical price of a custom-built car at that time; quite simply, a coachbuilt car for those on a budget.
Not to be confused with any other car, most Brewsters featured a unique heart-shaped grille and severely angled split front bumpers. Under the hood is Ford's typical 115-horsepower flathead V-8. Production of cars began in 1934 and ended in 1936. Approximately 135 were built including eight convertible roadsters, of which three are known to survive. It originally belonged to singer Al Jolson, later becoming part of the famed Harrah collection in Reno, Nevada.
